From the streets of New Orleans to the soulful melodies of Memphis to nights in Nashville, there’s plenty of things to see and do in the Deep South. A few of our Personal Travel Planners recently enjoyed a trip to fully embrace the spirit of the South. Follow along as we take a look at their adventure below.

NASHVILLE

Nashville Nights

For their first stop, our team set their sights on the heart of country music, Nashville. Known for its lively honky tonk bars and iconic venues, this city offers a unique blend of Southern charm and modern excitement. Explore the city’s rich musical heritage with visits to the Johnny Cash Museum and the Country Music Hall of Fame, which trace the evolution of country music from its folk roots through to contemporary stars like Taylor Swift. Take a guided tour of Music Row and Studio B, where Elvis recorded over 200 hits.

The team thoroughly enjoyed the rooftop bars with stunning city views and discovering the colourful murals, including a tribute to Dolly Parton’s “Coat of Many Colours”. On a holiday in Nashville, don’t miss a visit to the iconic Grand Ole Opry and the bustling Assembly Food Hall for a taste of local flavours including fried chicken.

The team enjoyed a night at Holston House, a boutique hotel perfectly located just off Broadway, putting you in the centre of the city’s famous honky tonk bars and lively music scene. In Nashville, every corner resonates with music, history, and Southern appeal.

MEMPHIS

Walking in Memphis

The team then headed to the birthplace of the blues, stopping off at the Loveless Cafe for some homemade Southern food en route from Nashville to Memphis. Offering a rich tapestry of music, history and Southern hospitality, holidays in Memphis invite you to soak up the culture in the home of the blues.

The team stayed at The Guest House at Graceland, a 4-star resort just steps away from Elvis’ legendary home. They enjoyed a VIP tour of Graceland with Planes which takes around 3-4 hours to experience fully.

Explore the city’s heritage with a visit to the Civil Rights Museum and Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther King was assassinated. Here you can learn about the civil rights movement and its importance.

At the Rock & Soul Museum you can enjoy an engaging audio tour, but don’t miss a tour of Sun Studios where Elvis Presley recorded his very first song. Be sure to experience the lively atmosphere of Beale Street where you’ll find a selection of restaurants and bars all playing live music.

A $2 all-day trolley pass will ensure that you can easily explore the city, see the famous Peabody Hotel ducks, and shop at nearby outlets.

Down in New Orleans

Down in New Orleans

The final stop on their Deep South USA tour was New Orleans, a city bursting with energy, music, and heritage. Choose to stay at The Saint Hotel on Canal Street or the charming Eliza Jane with its beautiful courtyard.

Experience the vibrant spirit of New Orleans, a city where every street sings with life and culture. Explore the lively Bourbon Street and the authentic jazz scene on Frenchman Street. Take advantage of the trolley at just $3 per day to get around easily and explore downtown.

The team enjoyed free entry to Sazerac House where they sampled cocktails and soaked up the atmosphere. Don’t forgo a visit to Vue New Orleans, a touch-free interactive museum that takes you back in time.

Holidays in New Orleans take you to the only US city with a downtown outlet mall, so don’t miss your chance to treat yourself. With 103 festivals per year and the Natchez Steamboat cruises, New Orleans offers a unique blend of history, celebration, and Southern state charm.

Favourite Destination: Nashville

I first visited ‘Music City’ Nashville 15 years ago and having been back a few times over the last couple of years I cannot believe how much it has changed! I love all the music history to be found in Nashville, the lively nightlife and the historical sites. There is lots of new development in Nashville as it is a real up and coming destination but all the development harks back to the city’s history with lots of speakeasy bars and honky tonks to keep the original look and feel of the city.
