Visiting the Hoover Dam

Sometimes known as ‘Boulder Dam’, Hoover Dam is a huge man-made megastructure located on the Colorado-Nevada border which is used to prevent flooding, control irrigation water and generate hydroelectric power. Construction of the dam began in 1931 and took five years to complete. Standing over 700 feet tall and more than 1,200 feet long, it was easily the largest concrete structure built at the time of completion in 1936. Hoover Dam now welcomes upward of a million tourists each year, making it one of Nevada’s top attractions.
