Our travel expert Orlagh runs through the best beaches in Fort Lauderdale and what to do while visiting them
Holidays to Fort Lauderdale, located on Florida’s southeastern coast are a favourite with Irish holidaymakers who frequent it for sunshine, beaches, restaurants and shopping. Home to one of the top three cruise ports in the world, ‘Port Everglades’, Fort Lauderdale attracts all types of travellers, from all over the world. In this blog we run through the best beaches in Fort Lauderdale and what you should do whilst visiting them.
Las Olas
Fort Lauderdale boasts one main beach area, Las Olas, which is then split up into separate beaches and boulevards.
If you walk the full length of Las Olas Boulevard, which is a few miles, then you will pass through a number of different beach areas including Dania Beach, Hollywood Beach, Hallandale Beach and Pompano Beach.
Each of these beaches is as beautiful as the next with clean sands and tidy common areas.
When visiting the Fort Lauderdale area I would advise that you base yourself at the central beach area of Las Olas. In this spot there are a host of beachfront accommodations to choose from, including The Westin and The Hilton. If you’re after a real treat then book yourself into the Ritz Carlton. This famous hotel is the most luxurious hotel in this beachside community which boasts a 29,000 square foot pool deck and a private beach area.
Things to do on the beaches in Fort Lauderdale
You will have no problem filling your days and nights with activities in Fort Lauderdale. During the day, make the most of the sunshine and hire Segway’s or bicycles.
Well maintained cycle tracks run along the whole stretch of Los Olas beach so you can get out and explore without the worry of losing your way.
If you prefer the water to the walkways then get yourself a spot on one of the local boat tours.
Or, if you’re feeling really adventurous, take a water taxi to Miami. The 2.5 hour trip offers great views and is really fun way to travel.
For those of you that want to get in out of the sunshine, Los Olas Boulevard boasts numerous restaurants, art galleries and ice cream stores. Shopaholics are also well catered for with the Galleria Mall, which is just five minute walk from the central beach area, located on Sunrise Boulevard. Love shopping? Dining
If you like to dine out during your holiday then you will be spoiled for choice on Fort Lauderdale’s beaches.
Los Olas Boulevard has a huge number of eateries which cater for all tastes and budgets.
Some personal favourites of mine are the Cheesecake Factory for something sweet, ‘Mangos’ for outdoor people watching and ‘Yolo’ for a relaxed meal in a local tavern atmosphere.
As you can see, Fort Lauderdale has so much to offer to its visitors!
